USG Senate Meeting

I.            Call to Order

            Roll Call

 

II.            Approval of the Agenda

            A.   President Gabriel makes a motion to approve the agenda.  AVP Kennedy so moved.

 

III.            President Gabriel Report:

            A.   The USG Senate Conference at Whispering Pines was a great success we received  great feedback from the organizations. The Bi-Organizational meeting will take place October 24, 2008 at 3 pm.

            B.   The Career Development Center will hold free exams through Kaplan including GRE, MCAT, LSAT and the GMAT. Please see me if you are interested.

            C.   I have appointments for Student at Larges and Senators tonight.  I would like to make  motion to appoint Alexis Amankwanor and Nikolas Darling for Senator.  Please step forward and state your name, major and why you would make a good Senator. Alexis states that she is a freshman and her major is in health and wellness.  She would like to be an advocate for the freshman students especially.  Nikolas states that he is a junior and his major is in public relations. President Gabriel opens the floor for questions.  Senator O’Grady states can both of you describe any experiences you have had with USG. Alexis states she does not have much experience but she will learn and her experience is learning itself. Nikolas Darling states that he has been a member of ZBT where he currently serves as president and is on the scholarship board with Dr. Kenyon. Senator Nunez asks what your goals are for the Senate.   Alexis states that she would like to do health promotions, for example, STD awareness. Nikolas states that he would like all the organizations to come together. Nikolas states that he would like to improve the internet and rooming on campus. President Gabriel states seeing there are no more questions we will move to vote. Vote is taken to appoint Alexis Amankwanor and Nikolas Darling as Senator and passes unanimously. I would like to make a motion to appoint Lindsey Porter, Tanisa Bancroft, and Melissa Stoll as Student at Large.  Floor is open for questions. Senator Renea Johnson asks if they can state their year, major and what USG is lacking.  Lindsey Porter states she is a bio major with a minor in Spanish.  Lindsey states that she thinks USG is run fairly well.  I think USG can create a little more awareness on their goals and how they affect the student body.  I have only been to two meetings but I believe USG is organized.  Melissa Stoll states she is a junior and she would like to continue to be a liaison.  Melissa states that USG has improved a lot in the past couple of years.  Tanisa Bancroft states that she has been in USG for the last couple of years and she would like to promote school safety.  President Gabriel states she will now move into vote and we will vote on each nominee individually.  Vote is taken to appoint Melissa Stoll as Student at Large and passes unanimously.  Vote is taken to appoint Lindsey Porter to Student at Large and passes unanimously.  Vote is taken to appoint Tanisa Bancroft to Student at Large and passes 17 yeas, 5 nays and 2 abstentions. President Gabriel swears in the new officers.

            D.  Questions & Comments. 

 

IV.            EVP Watson Report:

            A. Just a reminder for Senators to please check your mailboxes and they should be emptied out every day.

            B.  I would like to urge the Senate to solicit students to attend USG.  It makes our jobs a lot easier in implementing new ideas.

            C. At the USG Conference the Senate and E-Board sat down and had a discussion on how to improve USG.  I took notes they will be typed out and left in mailboxes, if anyone has any questions please contact me.

 

V.            Treasurer Dobney Report:

            A.  The survey wrap-ups will be posted and updated. I would like the survey to represent  USG to the fullest the surveys will ready next semester.           

            B.  I will go over the budget breakdown.  In regards to the concert with Verizon the only expense we have is for the banner which is costing us $200.00.  Verizon will be taking care of all other expenses.  Jeff Marsha will be taking care of comp tickets and sales which will be coming up on Monday.  Tickets will be $5 for two tickets per student ID. The first reminder was sent out on Monday and the second reminder went out on Wednesday.

            C.  I had the Community Affairs Board hand in their budget information on what they spent for the year and what activities they had.  Their binders will be graded on calculations and neatness and they will be given a letter.

            D.  Vice Treasurer Johnson is recognized. Vice Treasurer Johnson states that there will be a meeting with the non funded organizations next Tuesday during Bengal Pause. Vice Treasurer Johnson states he will notify these organizations on steps needed for non-funded organizations to become funded organizations. Vice Treasurer Johnson states that the room this meeting is being held is not yet established.

VI.            Senator Pro Tem Hemingway Report:

            A.  The new liaison reports are complete and more effective.  Liaison assignments will be coming up.  There are two committees left the Food Service and Game Room committee. I will pass out the committee assignments.

            B.  I would like to award Senator of the Month to Senator Rosie. Also, I would like to thank everyone who came to the conference at Whispering Pines.

VII.            Standing Committee Reports

A.  AVP Yazicilar Academic Report: President Gabriel states AVP Yazicilar was not able to make it to the Senate meeting due to religious reasons.

           

B.  AVP Dann Communications Report:

- Toilet Talk is in the Union and as of tomorrow will be up in every Residence Hall.

- The Street Team is going to work on promotions that will catch the student’s eye. I would love everyone’s help. We will help promote the concert, the game room, the academic mixer, and the movie night.

C.  AVP Kennedy Community Affairs Report:

-  The Breast Cancer walk is taking palace October 5, 2008 at 7 am.

-  There are 77 new voter registrations and the Dorm Storm is expanding to the hotel.

D.  AVP Hassan Student Life Report:

-  Movie night will take place October 7, 2008 in the Assembly Hall at 5 pm. 

-  I would like to organize a haunted house for open camp weekend and USG weekwith various events. 

-  This week is the window painting competition “Into My World”.

VIII.            Constituents Questions/Announcements

            A.   Senator Alinur asks when Union Bash is.  AVP Hassan states it is Friday October 24, 2008 from 9 pm to 2 am.  USG will be doing Bingo. Senator Rosie asks what the theme is. AVP Hassan states it’s “I love the 70’s.”

            B.  AVP Dann states WBNY is hosting the “Best of Western Talent” Thursday at 9:30 pm.

            C.  AVP Hassan states many of the organizations are hosting events on Tuesdays and Thursdays in the Union.

            D.  Senator Nunez states she hasn’t seen any advertisements regarding Union Bash.

            E.  Senator Alinur states that her organization (Model UN) is looking for more members and the meetings are on Mondays at 5 pm.

            F.  Senator Rosie states new ideas were brought up for camp such as: locks on the bathrooms, filters, reflective markers, and something for better cell phone service. 

            G. Senator Weaver states that she is performing an open-mic session hosted by AASO and would like everyone’s support.

            H. Treasurer Dobney states that she challenges everyone to make students aware of USG and voter registration.

            I.   Senator Renea Johnson wants to know if the flags in the Union will be completed so no one will be offended.

            J.  NYPIRG representative states there has been 1,280 voter registrations.  The deadline is October 10, 2008.  Senator Tamika Johnson asks if NYPIRG sent out reminders for students to actually vote. NYPIRG says the word is out.
