SENATE MEETING MINUTES

32nd LEGISLATURE

OCTOBER 14, 2008

 

 

Meeting called to order 8:45 pm

 

 

I.            Call to Order

            Roll Call

 

II.            Approval of the Agenda

            A.  President Gabriel reminds everyone to please put all electronic devices on vibrate. I would like to amend the agenda to move my report to go after Rules & Regulations Chair Hamilton. If there are no more amendments to the agenda we will approve the agenda.  AVP Yazicilar so moved.

            B.  President Gabriel states she will have to excuse herself at 9:00 pm because I have a conference call in regards to the SUNY delegates. EVP Watson will chair the meeting until I return.

 

III.            EVP Watson Report:

            A.  Attendance Policy - I recommend that you refer to the USG Constitution page 13 and 14 to read over the policy and to abide by it.  If you are absent more than three times you will be removed from the Senate.

IV.            Treasurer Dobney Report:

            A.  Updates on grading for the Communication organizations. The next group of   organizations will be Student Life and then Academics.

V.            Senator Pro Tem Hemingway Report:

            A.  Liaison Reports - everyone should have received their memo stating when the deadline is for your liaison report and your layouts.

            B.  Senator of the month - the winner will announce Cornel West at Rockwell Hall on Thursday November 6th at 7 pm.

VI.            Standing Committee Reports

            A.  AVP Yazicilar Academic Affairs Report:
                  -  Academic Mixer is tomorrow in the Social Hall at 6:30 pm; I am inviting everyone   to come.
                  -  Professional Committee meeting is this Thursday during Bengal Pause.
                  -  I had a meeting today with the Provost today and we discussed setting up a task force and the survey.
                  -  Health & Wellness center is not closed.
                  -  Scholarship Office is not closed even though the door is closed.
                  -  The College Senate Committee stated that the legislation passed no more double dipping.
                  -  The Director of the library stated that initiatives are taking place with the  amount of noise in the library.
                  -  Scholarship of the week is McNair and the Internship of the week is PIRG.

             B.  AVP Dann Communications Report:
                  -  Street Team - this was the first week and it has been very successful.
                  -  Peace Conference is Thursday October 23rd, and it is very important that we go.
                  -  Raheem DeVaughn concert - we sold 140 tickets.  Treasurer Dobney has created a Facebook group, so please tell all your friends.
                  -  Senator pictures please get your pictures taken so we can post them on the website.

             C.  AVP Kennedy Community Affairs Report:
                  -  Commuter Week is October 14th - 21st.
                  -  College Senate wrap-up.

             D.  AVP Hassan Student Life Report:
                  -  Window contest wrap-up.
                  -  Next Olympic event is Book Knowledge Street Knowledge.
                  -  Open camp weekend - I’m looking into making the small lodge into a haunted house.
                  -  Senator Appreciation - we have not set a date for this yet.

             E.  Rules & Regulations Hamilton Report:
                  -  Parliamentary Procedures and Robert Rules Conference is Thursday October 16th at 6:30 pm in Bulger N2A.
                  -  Attendance sheets - I have the Senate meeting attendance sheets if you would like to know your attendance.

            EVP Watson motions to recess until 9:35 pm when President Gabriel can return to the meeting.  Senator Johnson 2nd.  Vote is taken and passes by majority vote.  Floor is open for debate.  There is no debate vote is taken to recess until 9:35 pm and passes 18 yeas, 5 nays and 0 abstentions.

VII.            President Gabriel Report:

            A.  Appointments - I would like to nominate Conor White to Judicial. Floor is open for questions.  Vote is taken and passes 23 yeas, 1 nay and 0 abstentions. President Gabriel swears in Connor White as a Justice.  The second appointment is for Student at Large Chaz Hills-Dozier.  There is one more vacancy for Student at Large. Floor is open for questions.  Vote is taken to appoint Chaz Hills-Dozier for Student at Large and passes 22 yeas, 0 nays and 1 abstention.  President Gabriel swears in Chaz Hills- Dozier.

            B.  College Council - topics we discussed: Parking violation fines are to increase as of  January 1st.  President Howard made a recommendation that the conference room in Grover Cleveland Hall in room 418 be redesigned and renamed in the memory of Dr. Carmine A. Grande.

            C.  Student Assembly Conference is taking place this weekend. There is going to be a tuition hike which will be 3%, 4% or 5%.  As the cost of living goes up the tuition is going to go up.  SUNY is a state line and it is going to be cut. The college operate has their own operating budget but SUNY does provide funding for colleges to operate as well. SUNY Board of Trustees are in support of the increase however we need to convince the State Legislature. The resolution is to be adopted on Saturday with all the voting delegates. Floor is open for discussion.        

            D.  Town Hall meeting takes place Thursday 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm in the Adam's Mark Wright Room.

            E.   Reminder that free Practice Graduate Exams is Thursday October 23rd.

            F.   Presale tickets go on sale tomorrow for the Speaker Series.

            G.  Bi-Organizational meeting is October 24th in Classroom Building B122.

VIII.            Constituents Questions/Announcements

            A.  Senator Perez asks if the parking violation increase is going to be publicized.  President Gabriel yes it will be on the Daily, The Record etc.

            B.  Treasurer Dobney announces her committee meeting is tomorrow at 8 am.

            C.  Senator Perez announces that ASO is hosting a Kung Fu night and on the 19th is the International Food Bash.

            D.  AVP Dann states that new members need to fill out the blue cards.

            E.  EVP Watson announces that he would like everyone to prompt students to come to events.

            F.  Senator Desimone announces that the campus safety forum will be walking around campus to see what the campus needs for better safety.

            G.  NYPIRG gives and update.
