Results of the 2025-2026 Student Elections

Please see the following memo from the Dean of Students and the USG President

Dear Buffalo State Students,

We hope this message finds you well and thriving as the semester draws to a close.

We are writing to share an important update regarding the Spring 2025 United Students Government (USG) elections. After a careful review of the election process and in keeping with our shared commitment to transparency and student engagement, the decision has been made to nullify the recent USG election results. This decision was reached in alignment with the Buffalo State-USG Shared Governance model and in consultation with institutional policies and SUNY guidelines. In order to maintain the integrity of our student governance system, it is essential that all processes uphold the standards set forth in the USG Constitution and institutional expectations.

To clarify, this decision is about moving this forward and ensuring that our student government remains strong, representative, and rooted in fair and inclusive practices, which is always the goals of USG.

Clarification: Student Activity Fee Referendum Remains Valid

We want to affirm that the vote on the referendum for the mandatory student activity fee was not nullified. The referendum was a separate ballot initiative open to the entire student body, and it was not subject to the same internal procedures that govern the USG officer elections. It was conducted in accordance with SUNY policy and campus oversight standards, and therefore, the results of the referendum will stand.

What Happens Next?

To ensure operational continuity over the summer and into the beginning of the fall semester:

  • The current USG Executive Board will continue its service through the end of the Spring 2025 semester.
  • Nick Smith has been appointed to serve as Interim USG President for the 2025–2026 Academic Year.
  • Interim President Smith will work closely with the Dean of Students to appoint essential executive positions for summer operations and early fall governance.

Special Elections – Fall 2025

A special USG election will take place during the third week of the Fall 2025 semester. This timeline ensures that:

  • Students have time to express interest and submit applications,
  • Eligibility checks can be conducted in advance,
  • A fair and engaging campaign process can be supported.

This collaborative approach reflects our joint commitment to shared governance, student leadership, and continuous improvement.

We are excited about the future of USG and the opportunity this presents to strengthen our student leadership structures together. Thank you for your continued engagement, and we look forward to supporting you through the transition and upcoming elections.

With appreciation,

Dean Elizabeth Ching-Bush
